Melody's Musings

Stuff that catches my fancy and random, sorted thoughts from the inner scrambles of my mind.

What you may expect to find here are what I consider good taste and some of the best in photography, philosophy, humor, art, architecture, food, music, poetry, literature and dance. I hope you like some of the things I enjoy.

I like anything to do with good design such as interior design, architecture, photography, and art. I enjoy philosophy and psychology. I love to figure out what makes individuals tick. Music of most all types but particularly classical, world, pop, acoustic guitar is a big part of my life and add some dance to the music and my day is great! I like to write and occasionally I will write poetry and I really love to read it out loud and I even record it sometimes.

I'm a Myers-Briggs type ENFJ which means I love people and have a great interest in them.

I guess you could say I'm a humanities kind of person. :)

     Color and Character
This workman’s hutch, made years ago by an Iowa farmer, provides the perfect spot to store and display dishes and valuables. It was painted green for a splash of color,  then sanded down to reveal a bit of the original wood below. Changing the contents frequently keeps the space feeling fresh and fascinating.

    Chairs found on Craigslist:

    From Charlotte:

I check in with Craig (and his list) on a daily basis, and when I came across a pair of matching wooden arm chairs, I pounced. I talked the seller down to $75 each and brought them home for a facelift. We have a bright red coffee table I had sprayed at an auto detail shop, and I thought these could be a nice complement. A million hours later, all the nail heads and staples were out and I was ready to spray. The chevron fabric is one of my favorites, and I thought the blue would be a fun complement to the bright red. Our home was built in 1900 so contemporary decor can look out of place, but I love the juxtaposition of some colorful funky pieces with the classic lines of the house and some of our other furniture.

By the end of the second chair, I had my re-upholstering groove on. I’m still a little rusty with my sewing machine and my double welt cording, but that ties the whole thing together and cleans up my disheveled upholstery staples. These two chairs have been the perfect flexible seating for our living room, since they are small enough to move around where we need them when entertaining.

A sad, old crib sat at a thrift store — not useful as a baby bed for safety reasons, this piece seemed destined for the scrap pile! Until Cristin came along, that is… she saw some untapped potential in its pretty spindles and simple shape, and came up with a clever way to breathe new life into an old piece.

She found some cabinet doors in a garbage pile that were the perfect size for shelves, and removed a few brackets and braces from the crib to help reinforce the new legs. With a little creativity and a new coat of paint, this little unit serves as a clever magazine storage rack and functional shelves! Cristin says:

My favorite part about this project is that an existing piece that couldn’t be used in its existing form was transformed into a practical, functional and surprisingly unique piece of furniture. Obsolete baby furniture is turning up all over the place, and with a little vision these pieces can be upcycled and repurposed into interesting commodity furniture.

Refreshing Change
The quickest way to rev up your kitchen’s style quotient is to roll on a fresh coat of paint. With so many color choices available in wipe-clean paints, drab cabinets or walls can be banished in a weekend. A burst of cheery yellow cabinetry, tempered by a rich wooden island and floors and a white beaded-board ceiling, cozies up this room.

     Raise Your Glass
Alter a simple armoire to create a storage-packed buffet. Cut the doors in half and move the hinges to make room for a beverage bar above and storage cabinets underneath. Winery-inspired shelves create more space to house your favorite drinks. For a touch of elegance, add crown molding and scrolled bottom molding. Finish with a fresh coat of paint.

     Nifty Nightstand
Craft a small, ordinary dining table into a nifty nightstand. Mimic egg-and-dart molding around the apron of the table using clever paint techniques. Start by tracing evenly spaced arches around the bottom of the apron. Dip a curved-bristle brush in brown acrylic paint and drag it around the pencil mark. Dip a round artist’s brush in water, removing excess water with a paper towel. Brush to remove areas of the wet brown paint to create shadows and dimension.
