Melody's Musings

Stuff that catches my fancy and random, sorted thoughts from the inner scrambles of my mind.

What you may expect to find here are what I consider good taste and some of the best in photography, philosophy, humor, art, architecture, food, music, poetry, literature and dance. I hope you like some of the things I enjoy.

I like anything to do with good design such as interior design, architecture, photography, and art. I enjoy philosophy and psychology. I love to figure out what makes individuals tick. Music of most all types but particularly classical, world, pop, acoustic guitar is a big part of my life and add some dance to the music and my day is great! I like to write and occasionally I will write poetry and I really love to read it out loud and I even record it sometimes.

I'm a Myers-Briggs type ENFJ which means I love people and have a great interest in them.

I guess you could say I'm a humanities kind of person. :)

This year there was renewed energy at the rebooted 100% Design trade show - one of the anchors of the London Design Festival. Under new management, the show was buzzing with curious members of the design industry and a fresh layout. What remained the same: the most exciting sustainable furnishings came from emerging brands and designers, who explored the possibilities of flat-packed designs and the creative reuse of materials.

Aiming to make Danish design affordable and accessible, Vita made a great show with their flat-packed lighting. The Eos pendant light (shown above), which comes in two sizes, is constructed of feathers on a paper core. The lamp shades are designed to be flat-packed for delivery to the customer, and then assembled at home in less than 15 minutes. Some of their designs, like the Silvia lamp, can be used as either a pendant, table or floor lamp, as the lights are sold without fittings for maximum flexibility.

Fresh Patterns for Wooden Floors: Enigma Collection by Jamie Beckwith

The new Enigma Floor Collection by Jamie Beckwith emphasizes on quite a few original designs helping you find inspiration when it comes to wooden floors. Some of our readers have been complaining about the monotonous look of their living room or kitchen floors, so this post comes with several options to consider. Here are the arguments behind this collection from the producers: “Designers often specify wood for their projects because it brings a natural element to interior spaces, and because of its durability, availability and ease of installation and maintenance. The Enigma® flooring collection invites you to rethink wood flooring. Consider some of these options—use one of the 14 patterns as a wall to wall flooring installation, mix colors or patterns, or create an inset rug pattern in a traditional plank floor. Finally, floors become a design element, instead of an afterthought“. Find these patterns inspiring or do you rather consider them high-maintenance?

It never ceases to amaze us how creative Japanese designers adapt some of the world’s most awkward plots of land. Case in point: with only 52 square meters of triangular space to work with, Mizuishi Architect Atelier still managed to create a beautiful, light-filled, spacious home for a small family in Tokyo. It has a vanilla-colored base and a pitched roof clad in chocolate-colored panels that narrows down to an eye-catching point on one end of the home.
